Registration and further details coming soon! | | | | | FLPC and UCLA School of Law’s Resnick Program for Food Law and Policy, along with the Food Law Student Network, co-hosted the third Food Law Student Leadership Summit, in November at UCLA. The Food Law Student Leadership Summit convenes law students from around the country who share a passion for creating an equitable, transparent, healthy, and sustainable food system. The Summit included 75 students from 47 law schools nationally. Students heard from a variety of speakers, including food law faculty, attorneys, and policy advocates from a range of backgrounds. The Summit's keynote was delivered by Saru Jayaraman, Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United) and Director of the Food Labor Research Center at University of California, Berkeley. Read about the 2017 Food Law Student Leadership Summit. | | Big Hunger: The Unholy Alliance Between Corporate America and Anti-Hunger Groups Andy Fisher presented a book talk at Harvard Law School on December 5, 2017, sponsored by FLPC and the Harvard Food Law Society. In his new book, Big Hunger, he demonstrates the existence of a hunger industrial complex—the web of relationships between corporations and anti-hunger groups that perpetuate hunger rather than eliminate it. Watch a recording of his book talk online. 5th Annual Food Is Medicine Symposium On October 30, 2017, the 5th Annual Food is Medicine Symposium was held at Harvard Law School. Hosted by the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation of Harvard Law School, FLPC, and Community Servings, the symposium took an in-depth look at new research demonstrating the potential of medically tailored foods to reduce costs and improve outcomes for individuals coping with complex illnesses. At the event, Congressman James McGovern was awarded the first ever Food is Medicine Advocacy Champion award. Read about the symposium and watch a recording of the event online. | | | Announcing the Launch of FBLE's Website The Farm Bill Law Enterprise (FBLE), a consortium bringing together leading food, agriculture, and environmental programs spanning six law schools and the Food Law Student Network, can now be found at www.farmbilllaw.org. FBLE's mission is to leverage and expand the expertise of these partners by conducting coordinated research on the farm bill, identifying and proposing policy changes to improve future farm bills, and building a shared platform that creates opportunities to engage in legislative and regulatory implementation. Together, our partners have produced background resources on every title in the farm bill, which can all be found on FBLE’s new site. As the fourth edition of the guide, it encompasses employment opportunities at universities, government agencies, non-governmental organizations and research institutes, international organizations and agencies, law firms, and consulting and consultancy firms. | | | Food Recovery in the District of Columbia: A Legal Guide Food Recovery in the District of Columbia: A Legal Guide, released in October, addresses common legal questions that businesses, schools, and nonprofits often have about food donation in the District. It was commissioned by the DC Food Recovery Working Group, a group created to support food recovery efforts in D.C. and the surrounding area. | | | Good Laws, Good Food: Putting Local Food Policy to Work for Our Communities In October, FLPC, partnering with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, released an update to the toolkit Good Laws, Good Food: Putting Local Food Policy to Work for Our Communities. The toolkit is designed to educate and inspire individuals and groups, including local food advocates and nonprofit organizations such as local food policy councils, working to change their local food system. This toolkit was created to provide a starting place for these groups to understand basic legal concepts surrounding local food systems, develop a base of knowledge about key policy areas, and be inspired by innovative policy solutions from other cities and states. | | | A Review of Food System Policies in Maryland In September, FLPC released A Review of Food System Policies in Maryland, assessing the policies that impact Maryland’s food system. The report follows the framework of the Maryland Food Charter, which is organized around five goals: producing food, distributing food, accessing food, eating food, and recovering food/reducing waste. Within each goal, the report provides an overview of relevant existing policies in Maryland and identifies examples of policies from other states that Maryland could emulate. | | | | | | | | The Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC) is an experiential learning program of Harvard Law School devoted to educating students about the laws and policies structuring the food system while providing opportunities to work hands-on with clients and partners in this field.
